Artist Statement

Biophilia - our genetic programming for the love of nature, not just for food and shelter, but peace of mind, is one level of narrative found in my work.  Nature can be simple, peaceful and harmonious, but also dangerous and complex.  Life itself is complex and chaotic.  Finding a balance between the man made world and nature can create instability when not right and is another level shown in some of these paintings. 

Working from three dimensional photos and memory from time spent in nature, helps to contribute to the complexity of imagery.  The work starts in a more intuitive manner, a struggle emerges, surprises appear, and finish with locking the pieces together as found in a puzzle.  Using multiple techniques, real and abstract form, add to the chaos and keep the image active, and at times the painting may not be pleasing to all, but the goal is to be balanced.  Layering technique and narrative, I hope to create a new environment in which one may lose themselves for a time, as I do during the creative process.
